It was my first time attempting to play drums on a recording and it was ok for what it was. I added more verses and instruments over the next year and then made a full demo mp3 version, but the drums were still only roughly recorded with one mic from a year ago. I was in contact with Dylan Wissing, the great Johnny Socko drummer, who was starting his Indie Studio Drummer business and I was going to send him a track to record drums and percussion on. I opened my file for "Rollerskate" and found the drum track was missing and it sounded good enough to send him that song.
In a few days I had the drums and percussion track files all professionally recorded by Dylan. Then I went over to see Jake at Farm Fresh Studios who very quickly and expertly mixed the drums and the song track together the best that could be done. It was great to work with Dylan and Jake on getting this song sounding sharper. The great people in Muncie,IN featured many original and/or local bands in this festival and closed off a few blocks of Walnut Street. The Blue Bottle Coffee shop was undergoing some renovations/expansions and I had a nice little nook to play some acoustic music for an hour. I performed on the acoustic guitar, bamboo flute, pocket trumpet, kazoo, vocals, and roller skates. 45 minutes through we found out that the microphone and sound system was there to be used but was not unpacked. That might have come in handy for this show since they scheduled a full band on the street a few yards from the coffee house. It was still a good time. Instead of looping new improvised material and jamming to it, like I have using the pedal board in the past, I got to add a few solos to the band playing behind me since you could hear them right through the glass anyway, and a few customers thought that was slightly funny. Since it was the first time for me to play an hour show in a coffee shop, I did a rendition of "Black Coffee in Bed" by Squeeze as well a little bit of "Message in a (Blue) Bottle".

BC - Show #4

Thursday, May 28, 2009 at The Phoenix Hill Tavern in Louisville, KY. The other bands that played this 'audition' night were Bellfield and Kink Ador, both are from Tennessee. This was the first show using a full sound system with all of the instruments and it worked out pretty well. The one thing that didn't work out as well was the human fatigue of performing at 1am. I remember how it felt in college and it is just generally too late to start a set no matter what. So I checked out the awesome Bellfield and outrageous Kink Ador and then they were kind enough to stay to check out my songs. I played 'Rollerskate' 3rd instead of last and Brad and Sharon and Steve from Kink Ador jumped up onstage from the beginning of the song and played through it! It was great, I was a little too amazed that when I came off stage to play my trumpet solo that it was a live band playing instead of my loop pedal, that I couldn't really play a real solo. It was a great set to finally get the feel of playing a full set-up, on a full stage, with a full sound system, with a real sound person and even with guests. Band name change coming soon!
Thanks Phoenix Hill!

BC - Show #3

Wednesday April 15, 2009 at Doc's on Dill in Muncie, Indiana. The third show and the third in Muncie, because of the open creative music environment I mentioned before. I have done about 15 open mic performances in 4 states to prepare the melody and lyrics of the songs for the 'full band' shows. A special guest that was planning on joining the show had some last minute things to attend to, so it was another 'one-man band' show but with a full drum set this time. The things I learned from this show included: it is probably not possible to ever use a direct line out of my amp to the sound system when I am running a bass, acoustic gtr, and loop mic through it, increase your bid more on priceline the night before, and get some drum cases.
The show was a very good practice for getting 7 of the originals out in the open and 1 Isness jam. A very cool Trek joined the Isness jam for a marathon freestyle that made me realize I had to practice drums for longer periods of time. The acoustic guitar was almost unusable and the loop mic was totally unusable because of too high of signal(the direct line), so no beatboxing or flute loops or background harmonies or trumpet parts this show. "Stars" was mostly played with just vocals and drums, why should it always be a person with an acoustic gtr and vocals? We should see more set drummers at open mic nights with a vocal mic. It's an instant 'remix' sounding version of your song.
This newer venue reminded me of Uncle Festers in Bloomington slightly because it had the 'look down at the band' type of view from the main bar area, a cool place on a college campus.
Thanks Docs on Dill!

-Chauncey

BC - Show #2

Friday, September 12, 2008 at The Water Bowl in Muncie, Indiana.
The first original BC show was a fun time! The cool kid, James Nimmer, put together a great festival in a cool place in Muncie, IN called The Water Bowl. I played at a little snack bar area that had a beach theme where you look out onto the 'beach' area of the little lake and there was a larger lake on the other side.

The Btown boys, 2 Mics and a Kit jammed out right before the BC. This show was still a maiden voyage show for this act, and a good learning experience. An awesome gentlemen named 'Jack' came onstage during the song 'Robots' to freestyle sing a few verses that was really great. During the improv'd groove 'Isness', I took a stroll during the trumpet solo and found out that there was a Miniature Golf course right next to it. I proceeded to wander through the course while playing, and was joyfully amused to see the wonderful soundman (and main audience member) following me to see what I was doing, who was running the sound? oh, the Robots, right.

I was glad to see two friends (MC Sparkplug) listening to the last 2 songs. Tony Z came up for an absolutely excellent freestyle rap at the end of 'Anyway'. I decided to put on the rollerskates for the closer 'Rollerskate' and took out the bamboo flute stick and was headed to the mainstage to see what was going on, but the wetness of the concrete made me turn around. A good time!

Next show will definitely include some drum set appearances!

peace,
Chauncey

BC - Show #1

Monday June 23rd, 2008 at Doc's Music Hall in the front lounge was the first official BC performance! Mike from Doc's was nice enough to offer a Monday evening acoustic set to provide a little entertainment to the people needing a well earned drink after a beginning of the week Monday.
Besides being a chance to try out some of the original songs in a live looping setting, it was a chance to see how playing some 'somewhat' well known covers in front of a few people might work. The Beatles' "We Can Work it Out" can work in any setting and this was the cause for me to get my only monetary tip from a patron. The ending groove to Sly's "Stand" was looped and bass plus more was added which some people seemed to like. The originals highlight was "Rollerskate" which I finally got to loop everything and then take a walking trumpet solo. I had the skates but did not don them this particular night.
Isness Jam: Tony Z walked in and wondered what I was doing up there, so I restarted the Parliament loop I had already jammed on and he looped some of his vocal business, then laid down some freestyle. A nice patron who was talking guitar with me earlier joined this with some guitar fills. I added some trumpet to whatever was going on.
The summary for my findings on playing covers: I like to add certain ones to certain shows at certain times, maybe even regularly, but not necessarily very well known songs. To me, you become a human jukebox once you do more than one well known cover decently, or even not so decently, to certain audience members. "Do 'Livin on a Prayer', do 'Bad Mamma Jamma', or do 'Double Dutch Bus' " or something like that too often (even though I would like to do the last two soon).
All in all, Muncie's a great place with a growing, creative music environment and good people.
Thanks Doc's!

-Chauncey
